We will get your dog FAT!
No, we’re not about to puff up your pooch! The FAT in our Doggie FAT Camp stands for
“Fit and Trim”
Because a chubby pup isn’t “cute”. Consequences of “just a few extra pounds” are often greatly underestimated.
Recent studies concluded that 53 % of dogs in the US are overweight or obese, with an upward trend! The findings further indicate that, similar to obesity in humans, it can have detrimental effects on the health & lifespan of dogs.*
Does that sound “cute”?
Add happy years to your dog’s life!
It is a fact, that our pets will live shorter lives, if obesity is not addressed. On the other hand, taking care of your dog appropriately and keeping it at the proper weight can add up to 2.5 years to your dog’s life, not to mention prevent your pooch from suffering unnecessary “dis-eases” and help you save on vet bills to treat the ailments related to excess weight!
Do you think your pup is in the right “shape”?
A survey showed that 22 % of dog owners said their pup’s weight was normal, when it was actually overweight or obese. Our personal experiences can only confirm this! Few actually realize that their dog’s weight poses a real risk. Five extra pounds on your dog for instance are a lot more crucial than on a human.
Put your dog to the test: If you can’t easily feel your pets ribs and spine without applying pressure, the stomach isn’t tucked in and a waistline is hard to make out, chances are your dog is overweight!
While there are cases of medical conditions that predispose some dogs to obesity, most common cause is simply a result of overfeeding, improper diet/nutrition and lack of exercise. Unless your dog falls into the first category, this is good news, because it means it’s in your power to get your dog back into a healthy shape and enjoy a happier, healthier companion!
Get motivated on your dog’s behalf!
We’re here to help you get your pup back on the health track! Our Doggie FAT Camp will help your dog shed those extra pounds, get healthier and happier and it will provide you with the necessary education and guidelines to keep it that way!
Doggy FAT Camp vs. DIY or In-Home Programs?
It seems simple, right? Feed your dog less and up the exercise and off go the pounds. Technically, that’s true – but if it were that easy to do, you wouldn’t be reading this right now.
We know how hard it is for ourselves to keep a certain weight or exercise regimen. Often it takes pain or a health scare for us to get out of the rut and really commit to a change. Unlike our pets, we have the ability to communicate when & where it hurts. Our dogs rely on us to know what’s good for them, make the right choices and monitor their health. Many weight-related issues don’t become noticeable from the outside until they have reached more severe stages. So, our pets suffer silently without us noticing or even thinking that too much weight could be the cause of certain issues.
Your dog being at FAT Camp eliminates you falling into what we call the “sad puppy eye trap”, slowing down progress. You have a very special connection with your pup and your dog has probably got down to a tee how to push your buttons for an extra treat or a piece of food here and there, because clearly it’s starving! With our knowledge and nutritional experience, it is a lot easier for us to be immune to those “sad puppy eyes”! …and we can’t guarantee any goals, if we are not 100% in control over what your dog eats and that exercise requirements are being met.
Another fact is, that our lives become busier by the minute and it may be hard for you to find the time to devote to your dog’s weight-loss program. Maintenance is much less time-consuming, than getting pupster back in shape.
Last, but not least, during Doggie FAT Camp your pooch will be living with professional dog trainers 24/7, which means we are able to discover and work on eliminating habits that make it harder for you at home to withstand your dog’s begging behaviors, or exercise him properly, because each attempt to go for a walk turns into a tugging war or you have trouble controlling a dislike for other dogs in the neighborhood. So, while this is not a dog training program, your pup may just come home with new, improved manners as an added benefit.
How does Doggy FAT Camp work?
Doggy FAT Camp at Karma K9 starts out with a joint visit to our wonderful Vets at San Jose Beauclerc Animal Hospital. We have all our own dogs in their care and our personal experiences with their excellent staff, expertise and competence have made it easy for us to chose them to assist us in providing you with the bare health facts: a thorough Wellness Exam as well as a full Blood Panel will paint a clear picture of the status quo of your pooch – at the beginning and at the end of Camp. So you will not just notice a visual difference, but see your dog’s progress in becoming healthier black on white.
Following the vet visit and with the results of the blood panel on hand, we will go over a few questions about your dog’s current nutritional habits and lifestyle. We will then jointly discuss and set health goals for your pup, before he/she comes to live with us for a little while and we work with your pooch on reaching those goals through customized exercise programs and nutrition. We will provide food for the duration of Camp and to get you started right, your pup will also come home with a complimentary bag of food that’s in accordance with his/her nutritional needs.
Once your pooch has completed his/her part of the program and returns from Camp, your part begins: in follow-up sessions we will provide you with the ABC of canine nutrition, custom meal-plans and breed-specific exercise options appropriate for your dog’s constitution.
What is the cost of Doggy FAT Camp and how long does it take?
Naturally, length of Camp and thus prices vary from dog to dog – depending on severity of existing issues, breed, number of pounds to be shed and/or the goals you are looking to accomplish. We will give you an estimate based on our experience during our initial evaluation, which is always free of charge. After the results of our joint vet visit at San Jose Beauclerc Animal Hospital, we will be able to determine a realistic time frame and exact cost involved to whip your pup into shape. This will be a fixed price – if it takes us longer than anticipated to get your pup to reach his “FAT-goals”, there is no added charge to you. Typically the quote is in close range of our initial estimate, unless the health check-up reveals any issues that require specific attention. However, you are still free to make your choice based on your final price. Should you decide against camp at that point, we merely ask you reimburse our expenses for your dog’s health visit.
