From “Wild Child” to “Truly Trained”
Puppies can be quite the challenge! Otherwise you probably would not be reading this now, on your search for a way to stop pulling out your hair over unwanted behaviors. Ready to get that cute new four-legged family member to be more joy and less hellion? You are not alone! Our “Truly Trained” Puppy Program is one of our most popular Services for a reason.
Providing Guidance for Your Puppy to be Well Behaved and Socially Adjusted
Housebreaking troubles, excessive biting and jumping are usually on the very top of the list for puppy parents. Aside from not wanting bite-marks on everyone & everything and “business” to be handled outside, laying the right foundation from the start will save you many a headache. However, more importantly, it will also ensure that your puppy will develop into a well-behaved, socially adjusted joy to have around wherever you are. Having a truly trained dog allows for a significantly different lifestyle, with a lot more freedoms & fun for owner and dog alike. Time and money invested early on in the right training and socialization, will pay-off multifold over your dog’s lifespan!
Start Early and Finish Strong
The health of your dog and that of other pooches has top priority, and so we don’t accept puppies younger than 16 weeks to stay with us for Training Camp. Young dogs still have very fragile immune systems and often also carry worms and/or contagious bacteria, which can be transmitted to the dogs that come in contact with them or even just occupy the same space. Vice versa, until a dog has been fully vaccinated and is a little older, it is very susceptible to attacks on its immune system and since we all love happy & healthy dogs, we will always place precaution before chance.
In order to get your your little one started as early as possible and help you get through those often rough first couple of months with puppy as a new member of your family, we developed our “Truly Trained” Program. It is a “hybrid” between Personal Coaching and Training Camp, specifically designed to get your puppy started as early as 10 weeks young and provide continuous guidance and training throughout the first six months of your pup’s life – from the very basics, all the way to solid off-leash obedience.
Should your little one already be 16 weeks or older, you have the choice between our “Hello World” Puppy Camp or the “Truly Trained” Program. “Hello World” is our two to three week long board & train camp, teaching basic behaviors and manners (click here for all details) for pups 16+ weeks of age. Our “Truly Trained” Program will accept younger puppies (as early as 10 weeks) and starts off with about six weeks of Puppy Preschool, during which you and your little rascal will come out for private lessons with your dedicated Trainer, working on learning basic obedience behaviors, such as name recognition, nicely walking on leash, sit, down, etc. Of course, housebreaking and crate training are part of Puppy Preschool as well. Lastly, puppy will also be learning manners, which include not jumping on people or furniture, not biting or nipping and no excessive barking.
During the weeks of Puppy Preschool and all the way throughout puppyhood, your personal Trainer will be there to answer any and all of your questions and be your guide, provide you with the tools and knowledge to raise them to become confident, balanced, happy and respectful adult dogs. Once your little one is mature enough (around five to six months of age), your furry child will come to live with us for two weeks of advanced behavior Training Camp. During those two weeks we will fast-track your dog’s off-leash obedience for you, work on solidifying behaviors that may still pose a challenge and teach your pup a reliable recall under distractions, heeling off leash etc.
A Well Socialized Dog, Is a Confident Dog
Often underestimated, proper socialization is one of the key factors in a puppy’s development into a confident, well-mannered dog. And so throughout the program, your pup will be properly and safely introduced to common every-day-life situations and places, like grooming & hygiene, cars, dogs, people and high stress environments – to only name a few.
How Long is the “Truly Trained” Program and What Happens After?
Our “Truly Trained” Program starts off with about six weeks of private one-on-one lessons, once a week, at our Training Center, followed by continuous guidance and follow-up’s as needed, until your pooch is about six months of age. At that point puppers will come to live with us for about two weeks of Training Camp. Depending on age and breed, some dogs will require more time, and we will grant what’s needed to ensure your little one is coming home with the behaviors we expect our “Truly Trained” Graduates to have.
For the duration of Camp, your dog will live with us 24/7. Predicting that your next question will be visitation, let’s address it: While we, of course, won’t hold your dog hostage and are happy to schedule a visit with you, in most cases we DO NOT recommend it for the dog’s sake! As tempting as it is for us to want to visit, not wanting to stress our dogs unnecessarily should be the priority. After all, Camp is about our dogs and visiting tends to be for selfish reasons. We will gladly go over our recommendation for your specific situation.
Once Camp is completed, it’s time to show you the ropes. We will schedule a minimum of three private lessons with you, in which we will teach you how to handle your pup and maintain the newly learned behaviors. No worries, we are there for any questions and more sessions, if you should not feel 100% confident in how to respond to your little one in a rebellious moment or when presented with a new challenge as they grow.
Keep in Mind: We are Training Living Beings, Not Engineering Robots!
Dog Training Camp is a great way to quickly & properly train any dog. In the hands of the right, experienced trainers (do your research homework!), it will be a fun and transforming experience for your and your dog, regardless of the issues you were dealing with beforehand. However, you will not have to worry that your dog’s goofy character or fun spirit will be changed or broken. We don’t turn dogs into robots, we merely make them understand your expectations. We teach them the rules to abide by in this world. So they can enjoy a life of many freedoms untrained dogs are not able to be granted.
Every dog, without fail, will test their boundaries with those around them. Like kids knowing how far they can go at their Grandparent’s house versus at home, or that they can get away with certain things with dad, but not with mom. Dogs are no different. They will try to get their way. Training Camp (or any other form of training for that matter), will teach them the needed obedience, however, they will listen only to those who are diligent in following through. The more black & white you are about your standards and expectations, the faster Pooches will take listening as a given, not as an option. That doesn’t mean you can’t let your dog be a dog, it just means the times you do give a command, it is followed the first time around – for your dog’s safety. Our Follow-Up Lessons are there to show you how to fly that new helicopter we built you. Without follow-up guidance, it would be of little use to you.
Lastly, the question we also get quite often: “Will our dog remember us?” – The answer is always a loud and sounding YES! You don’t have to worry, your dog will not forget you. And as much fun as Camp is, you will also not have to worry about your pup not wanting to come back home. We like to compare it to us going on a really nice vacation – no matter how much you may enjoy yourself, home will always be home!
Dog Training Camp or Private Lessons?
While you can absolutely also achieve great results in Private Lessons, a Training Camp is always going to be the fastest and most effective way to achieve lasting results – and give you a little break, time to take that vacation, get your carpets cleaned or do that remodel you’ve been wanting to tackle! The decision for either should be based on the time you (realistically!) have available for training & homework, as well as on your personal preference. Not everyone would like to be a part of the training process. The choice is yours.
